Headline News : Arizona State Champs Rd1
Posted by Admin on 2008/11/20 1:54:45 (1628 reads)

This weekend saw the first round of the Arizona state champs run at the rather well known & love Nitro Pit in Wittman,AZ. In the pro classes it was the Billy Fischer show, taking a clean sweep of TQs & wins in buggy & truggy, Trevor Clement laid claim to 2nd in both as well, whilst 3rd in buggy went to Chris Wheeler and in truggy to Mr Ross Denny. We received a great (long!!) race recap from announcer extraordinaire Kenny Brosch, Click Read more...

Race recap from world famous race director Kenny Brosh "What a beautiful day for a series opener! Saturday was in the mid 90's which is about perfect weather here in Phoenix Arizona. I had been preparing and looking forward to this day for a couple months and rolling into the Nitro Pit at 7:30AM I knew right away that we were in for a big day. Even at that early hour there were still ez ups covering a good portion of the pits.

We did registration different and better than usual thanks to great helpers...08 IFMAR worlds registration team of my Mom, Dad, and Jessica They not only got you registered but handed out the free event t-shirts, sold personal transponders, and got most of you to sign the event poster that will (hopefully) soon be going into One Hobbies... Thanks!!

New Nitro Pit owner Chris Stavros helped me enter racers and after a short drivers meeting we were off and running with of course.....

Intermediate Buggy: Here were the top 10 from last years series...
Rich Chouinard
Joseph Gutierez
Trevor Geiger
Paul Lynch
Greg Cochran
Dave Burt
Richard Brodie
Steve Kinsey
Tim Stefaniak
Cole Thornton

Past champions, 06 Bob Cummins, 07 Paul Yuan, 08 Chouinard

This is always such a great class and always comes down to the wire. There were 33 drivers competing in this class Saturday and I would say 85% had a real shot at the A main Three heats of 11 drivers and the first went down as follows....... John Guest is a kid that's maybe 12 years old and started racing at the Nitro Pit after RC Mania Closed. He started with gas truck and within a month or so Todd Jonas saw some talent and said, take my Truck (literally) and try 1/8th scale truck! Well I guess Todd was right because John started out solid and kept it up the entire day. Heat 1 say John run 8 laps in 6 minutes 35 seconds and also run the fast lap of the race. Tori Santiago from Puerto Rico came up with an 8 lap run as well. Dominick went 7 laps with his new D8 ride and Sonsuwan, Napoleon, and Martinez followed suit. Some new names in there running fast right away! In heat 2, 8 drivers went 7 laps.
Spears #11 7 6:06.358 50.283
Costa Lopez #1 7 6:11.116 48.299 4.758
Brandon Akiyama #6 7 6:13.904 50.698 7.546 Will Garza #10 7 6:15.726 49.779 9.368 Ray Wood #3 7 6:27.018 53.447 20.660 Don Tellefson #7 7 6:35.942 49.665 29.584 Ron Wood #4 7 6:50.428 55.181 44.070 Jack Greenleaf

Heat 3 as always had most of the quick guys and we did have a new TQ by the end of it. Cody Rothe who just picked his Losi 8 2.0 up Friday had it ready Saturday morning and with just a little practice after an early motor issue, set tq with an 8 lap 6 minute 17 second run. Cody was all smiles after he first hit the track, saying the 2.0 went through the bumps better than the original Losi 8 buggy. Another 3 drivers went 8 laps (Greg Singletary, Greg Cochran, and Aaron Mathiason). New team Mugen driver Frenchy Bessette went 7 laps in the heat. After round 1 the top 15 looked like this:

1. Cody Rothe 8 6:17.544 1 1
2. Greg Singletary 8 6:34.065 1 2 16.521 3. John Guest 8 6:35.506 1 1 17.962 4. Greg Cochran 8 6:38.770 1 3 21.226 5. Tori Santiago 8 6:44.051 1 2 26.507 6. Aaron Mathiason 8 6:44.459 1 4 26.915 7. Carl Spears 7 6:06.358 1 1 8. Costa Lopez 7 6:11.116 1 2 4.758 9. Brandon Akiyama 7 6:13.904 1 3 7.546 10. Will Garza 7 6:15.726 1 4 9.368 11. Dominick Sansone 7 6:17.817 1 3 11.459 12. Frenchy Bessette 7 6:22.489 1 5 16.131 13. Ray Wood 7 6:27.018 1 5 20.660 14. Tom Sonsuwan 7 6:33.199 1 4 26.841 15. David Napoleon 7 6:35.816 1 5 29.458

In round 2, John guest again went 8 laps and that's when I took notice that he was going to be a main player in this series! In heat 2, Carl Spears went 8 laps as well as Kris Fauss, both of whom didn't in round 1. Shake up to the top 15 bumpint Sonsuwan and Frenchy out of the top 13. Special mention here about Autie Bender. THis little guy showed up after round 1 and without any practice went 7 laps in 6' 03". Good enought for the A main! The final qualifier for Int. Buggy came and went and the TQ stayed with Buttercup (Cody Rothe) with his round 1 time of 8 laps 6' 17", but he was only 3 seconds off with his round 2 run. Fast and consistent laptimes for Rothe was making the other racers nervous, or at least should have been.. Your top 13 maiking the A main through qualifying:

1. Cody Rothe Root 8 6:17.544 1 1
2. Greg Singletary 8 6:34.065 1 2 16.521 3. John Guest 8 6:35.506 1 1 17.962 4. Greg Cochran 8 6:38.770 1 3 21.226 5. Tori Santiago 8 6:44.051 1 2 26.507 6. Aaron Mathiason 8 6:44.459 1 4 26.915 7. Carl Spears 8 6:44.517 2 1 26.973 8. Kris Fauss 8 6:49.461 2 2 31.917 9. Autie Bender 7 6:03.897 2 3 10. Costa Lopez 7 6:11.116 1 2 7.219 11. Brandon Akiyama 7 6:13.904 1 3 10.007 12. Will Garza 7 6:15.726 1 4 11.829 13. Dominick Sansone 7 6:17.817 1 3 13.920

Looking back at the C main event, there were plenty of contenders and definately more cable of moving up than the 2 that would be permitted to.
Tom Auayfuay and Steve Kinsey held down the top 2 spots for the entire race but Kelly Lugo was on the move going from 7th to 3rd by the end of the 10 minutes.

Int. Buggy B main:
Tom Sonsuwan started 1st in the B and held that spot each lap earning a transfer to the A main. Cole Thornton as well as Frenchy bumped to the A giving us a 16 car field. 16 instead of 15 because Sonsuwan runs an electric buggy and I'm taking him out of the points after each race day and moving everyone up behind him. I'll keep his point total seperate because I do want to see where he would end up overall. I'll trophy him out seperate and hope that other electric 1/8th scales will be out in the future.

Intermediate Buggy A main:
Unfortunately Frenchy broke early and wasn't able to complete a lap. Too bad because it's always cool to hear all the people cheer him on. I'm not going to beat around the bush here, this race was all Cody Rothe. Cody led from the tone and won in a dominating fashion; completing a perfect 220 points for the day. Cody never gave up the lead and looking at the printout was the most consistent by far. Side note: If you pay attention to the PDF results for the past years the fastest 5 and 10 laps are always off because the system counted the short first lap. Well, now that has been fixed so you can actually see your true average Very cool stuff and if you look at this race you'll see that 3 or 4 other drivers had a faster single lap but Cody ruled them in every other category and won by a clean lap over 2nd place. Nice Job Cody!! You've come a long way in the past year. Really since the day you started running that Losi Kris Fauss who started 8th moved up to the 2nd spot on lap 10 and held it to the finish. A great point day for Kris! Moving up from 14th was Tom Sonsuwan all the way to the 3rd and final podium position. I believe that's the first podium for Tom. Once you take Tom out of the points it moves Greg Cochran, Autie Bender, and Tori Santiago into the 3rd through 5th positions. Autie picked up 3 spots on the last lap with Carl Spears and Costa Lopez falling out right near the end of 20 minutes. Takes all day to go from 33 to 1 but it sure is fun! And Cochran, your trophy is being made right now.

Expert Buggy: Top 10 from last year

Past Champions: 06 Ryan Maifield, 07 Billy FIscher, 08 Casey Peck

Unlike years past where it was just running laps till the A main came around, this year I fully expect there to be a battle every single round to see who makes the A main Saturday had a full 24 drivers competing in this class of classes and all three past champions were on hand as well!

Even in the first heat up, 9 drivers went 8 laps and another 6 in heat #2. Oh yea, Billy Fischer and Ryan Maifield went 9 Would we expect anything less Those guys are worth the price of admission to any race and we're very lucky to have them here locally! Look at how fast the top 15 were after just 1 round. Wow has Expert Buggy finally took off!!

In round 2, Mike Friery threw out a super 9 lap run and that put him 3rd quick at that point, for the day. In fact I just have to post these times for that first heat, man they're quick from top to bottom.... And that's the first heat!

Mike Friery #9 9 6:41.042 42.535

Reigning champion Casey Peck brought the THUNDER for round 2, taking the win and going 9 laps.....Fischer and again Maifield went 9 as well with another big bunch of 8 lappers in there as well.

Eric Kirts 8 6:28.139 1 6 26.670 15. RICH CHOUINARD 8 6:28.859 1 6 27.390

Some pretty tight margins there Just look at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd...
Eric Kirts and RIch Chouinard would start 1-2 in the B main. Kirts would only give up that lead spot for about 4 laps of the 16 total, earning himself a spot in the big Show Race 11. Dave Burt moved up from a 5th place starting position and took down the 2nd bump up spot.

Expert A Main:
The Tone went off and Ryan Maifield quickly took the top spot from Billy Fischer but after running nose to tail for a couple laps Ryan was the first to flinch giving the lead back to TQ Fischer. Billy never looked back with some of the best drivers falling out shortly into this one. Maifield had motor issues I believe and Casey Peck retired his car after 8 laps as well. Moving quickly up to 3rd and then 2nd was Kyosho Driver Trevor Clement. Clement withstood a strong run from Chris Wheeler in his Losi but never did give up that 2nd position finishing 9 seconds infront of Wheeler. Just take a look back at this one and look at the fastest lap, fastest 5-10 and 20. Especially take a look at Wheeler vs. Clement! THose guys were on it and so close every lap.. Luke Jonas finished 4th with his Jammin and 9 seconds back was Ryan Phillips rounding out the top 5. This was by far the best Expert Buggy class at any Series race to date.. Thank you to all of you for running this class and making it a true spectacle this year! Congratulations again to TQ and Winner: Team Losi/Novarossi driver Billy Fischer! Where you at Paul Lynch?

Last year was the first year we split up 1/8th truck into Expert and Intermediate. It was the right thing to do and this year I'm really excited to see what happens. Troy Sears has to be considered the favorite going into this season, as he has show flashes of brilliance in the past 6 months but not enough consistency or top finishes to warrent a bump to Expert.

Driving the Nationals winning Mugen MBX5T, Tori Santiago put in the first 8 lap qually in the class with a 8 lap 6' 43" run. Bill Massey, Ray Wood, and Neil Williams went 7 laps. Notice to Bill Massey, you are hereby given a standing warning for out of control driving, each incedent of WFO driving will result in a 5 second stop and go in pit lane Heat 2 was quick with 4 more drivers going 8 laps including Troy Sears, Carl Spears, Vareck Wright and Justin Kinsey! Nice job guys!! Top 15 after round 1

1. Troy Sears 8 6:18.189 1 1
2. Carl Spears 8 6:23.441 1 2 5.252
3. Vareck Wright 8 6:30.980 1 3 12.791
4. Justin Kinsey 8 6:37.608 1 4 19.419
5. Tori Santiago 8 6:43.810 1 1 25.621
6. Tony Veno Sr 7 6:02.076 1 5
7. Frenchy Bessette 7 6:16.883 1 6 14.807 8. Bill Masey 7 6:19.020 1 2 16.944 9. Ethan Kovalsky 7 6:22.736 1 7 20.660 10. Ray Wood 7 6:26.476 1 3 24.400 11. Neil Williams 7 6:31.255 1 4 29.179 12. Will Garza 6 5:07.910 1 5 13. Jan Ortiz 6 6:08.564 1 6 60.654 14. Clay Fabrizius 6 6:08.694 1 7 60.784 15. Tom Havery 6 6:09.256 1 8 61.346

In heat 1 round 2, Will Garza went 8 laps for the first time and Tori put in his second 8 lap run of the day. Heat 2 saw Troy Sears go another 3 seconds quicker than his round 1 time and earn a solid TQ for the 5 bonus points. Vareck and Carl backed up their 8 lap runs from Round 1 and Crash (Sean Dickenson) ran 8 laps fresh off a Friday Face Restructure. TOny Veno rounded out the 8 lappers for the day and would start in the A main. No BQ this time for Veno. lol Here was the 13 that made it in on quals

1. Troy Sears 8 6:15.338 2 1
2. Carl Spears 8 6:23.441 1 2 8.103
3. Vareck Wright 8 6:25.417 2 2 10.079
4. Will Garza 8 6:28.594 2 1 13.256
5. Tori Santiago 8 6:34.311 2 2 18.973
6. Justin Kinsey 8 6:37.608 1 4 22.270
7. Sean Dickenson 8 6:41.758 2 3 26.420 8. Tony Veno Sr 8 6:53.511 2 5 38.173 9. Frenchy Bessette 7 6:16.883 1 6 10. Bill Masey 7 6:19.020 1 2 2.137 11. Jack Greenleaf 7 6:21.595 2 3 4.712 12. Ethan Kovalsky 7 6:22.736 1 7 5.853 13. Ray Wood 7 6:26.476 1 3 9.593 14. Neil Williams 7 6:31.255 1 4 14.372 B main 15. Albert Andran 7 6:41.981 2 9 25.098 B main

Int. Truck B main: Cody Cochran had a poor day qualifying and started from the 7th position in the B main. With his normal A main skill he worked his way to the front quickly and cruised to victory. Youngster and past Nitro Novice champion Albert Andran finished where he started and earned a spot in the A main event. Tom Auayfuay didn't make the main but watch out for this guy by the time February 7th comes around! Neil Williams went from 1st to 5th and just couldn't climb all the way back to a transfer spot, finishing 3rd by 11 seconds.

A main!!!
In the first few minutes it was those who started in the top 5 that ran in those positions. Early on a few of them fell out, one of which was Carl Spears who had a bad luck break on the front double. Cody Cochran, Albert Andran, and Tori Santiago also fell out early and we focused in on the front of the pack. Just like the TQ in Intermediate BUggy and Expert BUggy, TQ of this class would dominate and take home a perfect 220 points for the day. Troy Sears drove his Kyosho to victory by a comfortable margin. Troy didn't have the fastest lap, fastest top 5 or 10 but where it counted he did have the high mark and that was fastest top 20 laps. Troy earned the win against some great other drivers and has to feel mission accomplished for round 1 at least. Vareck Wright surprised me with just how fast he was driving. Looking at his lap times he can definately run with Troy, he just needs to find the consistency. The best battle of the day belonged to Ethan Kovalsky who qualified 12th and Tony Veno Sr. Both Drivers were running strong and gaining positions near the end of 20 minutes. First Ethan then Veno played chase and in the closing 2 laps they must have changed positions 6 times. On the last lap Kovalsky was in 3rd just feet in front of Veno when Veno made an inside pass through the woops. Qickly Kovalsky took the spot back and had about 2 seconds on Veno as they entered the Left side Double Double.. Kovalsky was feeling the pressure and went of the track needing a marshall and as that was happening Tony went by to take the 3rd and final podium position by 5 seconds of Ethan. A great race to watch come down to the last rhythm section! Nice job guys!! Sears and Wright went a clean 3 laps further than 3rd and 4th place and Will Garza finished just one lap back in 5th.

This was and will be the smallest class of the series with 9 entries Saturday. In Round 1 Billy Fischer took his Losi 8T to the front by 15 seconds over the 2nd place driver. A 9 lap 6' 17 second run. Kyosho's Trevor Clement and Losi's Casey Peck also went 9 laps. In Round 2, Fischer went 1.2 seconds slower but again ran 9 laps and put a stranglehold on this class!! Peck again went 9 laps and this time 10 year old Jammin Driver Tanner Stees and fellow Jammin Drive Ross Denny went 9 laps. Here was your qualifying order for the 20 minute A main event:

Qual# Name Laps Race Time Rnd Pos Behind FastLap
----- ---------------------------- ---- --------- --- --- ------ ------- 1. Billy Fischer 9 6:17.794 1 1 2. Trevor Clement 9 6:32.806 1 2 15.012 3. Casey Peck 9 6:33.204 2 2 15.410 4. Ross Denny 9 6:37.569 2 3 19.775 5. Tanner Stees 9 6:42.213 2 4 24.419 6. Luke Jonas 8 6:06.036 1 5 7. RICH CHOUINARD 8 6:07.829 2 5 1.793 8. Carlos Lopez 8 6:20.306 2 7 14.270 9. Chris Stavros 8 6:40.149 1 7 34.113

A Main event:
To round out an absolutley outstanding day for Billy Fischer he needed to take the win here to make it 4 for 4. 2 tq's and 2 wins it was, as Billy led from start to finish. He ran away from everyone leaving only Trevor Clement and Ross Denny on the same lap untill the last laps of the race. Billy's fast lap was about 1.2 seconds quicker than the field, his top 5 laps were 1.4 quicker, His top 10 were 1.3 quicker and his top 20 were 1.2 quicker. While Billy ran away with things the real battle was between the Jammin x2crt of Ross Denny and the Kyosho STRR of Trevor Clement. Coming down the stretch and the final lap Ross Denny had 2nd place with Clement closing and right on his tail. Final lap and over the left to right double Denny and Clement were close enough to touch. Denny had position through the right hander before moving right to left to the mogules. Ross left about 18 inches on his right side and Trevor carried huge speed there to make the pass. Quickly moving right both cars got together and Ross ended up moving 10 feet out front of Trevor as both cars moved up the hill on the back left side. At the top of the hill Ross hit just a bit too much break an his car went into an extended stoppie and just rolled onto his lid, that gave Trevor the inside line and he took the 2nd spot by 3 seconds. What a finish Tanner Stees finished on the same lap 24 seconds back and Luke Jonas rounded out the top 5. Congratulations to Billy for sweeping both expert classes and to Trevor Clement for finishing 2nd in Both expert Truck and Expert Buggy! Clement trying to three peat in the truck class........

Next and finally the last class we'll talk about today is Nitro Novice: Last year over the course of 8 rounds we had a total of 22 entries in the Nitro Novice class. This year we already have 31! Nice

In heat 1, Quicks RC's Clay Fabrizius went 8 laps in 6 minutes 31 seconds; A time good enough for tq for the day. (Keep in mind Novice has a heads up start before the start finish line and get a free lap) Korel, Haynes, McGovern, and Allen went 7 laps. In heat 2 only 1 driver, Trevor Holtorf went 7 laps, and in heat 3 another 4 did being Colton Motley, Jay Stuart, Jeff Freeman, and Nathan (Coming in Hot) Nesvig. Here were the top 15 after round 1:

I had a couple drivers leave early so we ran a stacked B main event. Autie Bender started 4th but quickly worked up the the lead spot and never looked back. He went on to the 13 second win and had a ticket to the A main event. Moving up throught the pack quickly was 8th place starter Craig Avery. He was 3rd by lap 1 and 2nd by lap three and managed to take that place home by over a lap on 3rd place Rachel Freeman. Rachel had just a couple bad laps or would have had a chance to battle Avery for that last bump spot.

Novice A main:
Well following suit of every other class for the day, there would be no late minute comeback instead it would be Colton Motley moving from 2nd to 1st on lap 1 and leading the entire Event. This may be the 1st outing for Colton but he showed through qualifying and the Final that he has talent and might have a short 3 month stay in the Nitro Novice class Trevor Holtor steadily climbed from 10th position to the 2nd spot and finished on the same lap as Colton, 59 seconds back. Longtime local racer Burgie Burgensmith held off a hard charging Ronnie Haynes by just 1.2 seconds at the end of 12 minutes. In addition, Burgie came from 13th and Ronnie from 11th! Nice job guys!! Dale Jones finished out the top 5.

Well, I felt we had a great day to start off our 4th annual Arizona Championship Series! Thank you to the racers and those that helped with the event. From the track, to registration, to my water crews, everyone was dependable and prepared! I appreciate all the help from the racers in regards to marshalling it seems like we have turned the corner on that one!
