In his own words:
I got started in RC in March 1999. I just turned twelve and was wanting to do something with racing. I just stopped racing motocross the previous year due to injuries. Once I heard the nitro engines, I knew it was for me. My dad bought a used RC10GT and the rest is history. I had a pretty natural feeling for the cars and loved to drive. I would practice three times a week and then club race two times a week on top of that. In November 1999 I attended my first big race event; Hot Rod Hobbies Shooutout. I almost TQed a round and got my first sponsor; O’Donnel. Then in 2000 I finished 4th at The Dirt Nitro Challenge and got picked up by Team Associated. After that I TQed the Silver State in Gas Truck, and after that race Richard Saxton gave me his Thunder Tiger 1/8 and I got sponsored by them. My first race with the 1/8 was the 2000 ROAR Nationals in Pleasant Hill, MO (my future father-in-laws track) I finished second behind Brian Kinwald in my first ever 1/8 race. Now 13 years later, driving RC cars is my profession and I live right by the track that put me on the map for 1/8 buggy racing.
