Dakotah Phend is top qualifier of the 2017 Silver state in Las Vegas, having bookended qualifying with a TQ in round 1 and finishing up mere hundredths behind a resurgent Ryan Maifield who would TQ round 3. The track during the single round of qualifying saw temperatures in the low 30s (celcius) and it was Phend who looked like he might be on course until Maifield made it a clean sweep of qualifying today having TQ’d Q3 in E-Buggy, Pro Truck and Pro Buggy.

Lining up 2nd on the grid will be Ty Tessmann level on points with Maifield, rather interestingly… 7 different cars in the top 7, oh and Cav still hasn’t turned up… Missing the cut from the A was Tekno’s Joe Bornhorst – top of the hotly contested B main which should provide some entertainment tomorrow.

Ryan Maifield put any fustrations from yesterday firmly to bed as he opened up the 3rd (and last) round of qualifying with a TQ of the open E-Buggy class. Going into the last round the overall spot was between Maifield and Tessmann, the pair in the lead of the heat after Ronnefalk made a mistake early on having led after 4 laps. Maifield would make it round for a decisive 14 lapper, Tessmann just missing out, caught by the tone with 13/7:00.905, Tebo would claim 3rd and a strong 4th for Serpent’s Billy Easton.

Silver State: Friday Qualifying

Returning to the scene of the 2016 IFMAR World Championships this weekend for the annual Silver State Nitro Challenge – one of the classic ‘majors’ of 1/8 buggy during the course of a season. We’re back in Las Vegas with the familiar backdrop of the Strip twinkling and luring new arrivals in all the time before sending them home to their wives with hangovers, regrets, thinner wallets but usually some wonderful memories.

Friday at the Silverstate got going with a schedule proposing two rounds of qualifying for the 131 drivers in total attending the event – significantly smaller than the Nitro Challenge some three weeks previously in Arizona. The track has seen a revamp with only a couple of sections surviving the Worlds – the raised table corner and brick section. The lighter turnout however means civilised hours, time for dinner,

Amongst the talking topics here this weekend is the conspicuous absence of Mr Ryan Cavalieri, Team Associated’s talisman and 4x Worlds winner. Rumours hint at a heated exchange a couple of weeks ago and subsequently Mr Cav has been put on the naughty step, placed on ‘ice’ or rather given a 4 week cooling off period and thus misses a couple of events including Silver state.

Onto the track action and two rounds of qualifying saw Ty Tessmann kick off proceedings TQ’ing Q1 of E-buggy infront of former team mate David Ronnefalk, amid some murmurings of ‘team-related’ blocking… 😉 Pro truck with all of 24 entries, Maifield out front comfortably with Ryan Lutz 2nd and Ty Tessmann 3rd running out of fuel on his last lap. In Pro Buggy Dakotah Phend strung together a great 7min run, some 3secs ahead of Worlds TQ Jared Tebo and Tessmann 3rd.

Jared Tebo claimed an historic 4th victory of the prestigious Silver State in the Nitro Buggy class as raced top qualifier Ryan Cavalieri hard all the way t the finish, Tebo taking the lead from longtime-friend Cav on lap 63 setting up a Maxima/MX powered 1,2 for Tebo & Cavalieri – a further strong showing after the Dirt Nitro Challenge. Ty Tessmann would go onto claim 3rd having qualified a lowly 10th by his standards – spending much of the first half of the final climbing his way through the field whilst Robert Batlle settled for 4th after losing 20 sec after a flame out during refueling due to a low idle cost him time. Jared would make it a double victory as he took the win in the E-Buggy class as well.

In truck it would prove to be a nailbiting finish as Ryan Maifield pipped Tekno RC’s Ryan Lutz to victory, making it his 3rd nitro truck win at the Silver State. TQ Ty Tessmann led early on however fell back to 4th on lap 19 and further problems dropped him as far down as 9th before recovering to 6th however the action was out front during the closing stages as Lutz tried to close the gap to Maifield, bout would settle for 2nd, Jared Tebo rolling home in 3rd confirming a great weekend for him.

JQ beats ex World Champ in Vegas

LasVegas5

Last week end JQ headed to Las Vegas with newly out of retirement former World Champion Greg Degani – making a cameo appearance after a few years out, but now running for JQ Racing. The plan was to spend 4 days testing, including a warm up race on the 2nd day. Local track record holder Kyle Johnson TQed over JQ, after two rounds of qualifying.

The A main was 25 minutes long, and after a fun race on a true offroad track, bumpy and difficult, JQ took the win, and Degani finished 2nd. Track owner Chris Tocco got 3rd with his Kyosho. Local JQ racer Cody Walker made it 3 JQs in the main, finishing 9th.
