2016 IFMAR Worlds News

David Ronnefalk is World Champion!

David Ronnefalk is your new 1/8 Offroad IFMAR World Champion!

Starting 3rd on the grid, Ronnefalk would follow defending Champion Ty Tessmann round until lap 15 where pitstops cycled through and he moved into the lead, drama already started even before the start as the extended ‘dramatic musical intro’ saw Ryan Cavalieri’s engine cut, mechanic dad Lou forced to re fire him and start from the pitlane, thus handing Tessmann a nice cushion behind him and Ronnefalk open track.

Tessmann would lead for the opening stint before Ronnefalk assumed the lead and began to open a gap that would sway a lot, it was a final he dominated, and one dominated by the action behind as at times 6-7 drivers were in the hunt for podium spots. Occasionally the gap outfront would fall as Ronnefalk pitted for fuel and the occasional mistake played a part, Tessmann as well as Tebo were running in the top until Boots managed to catch up, looking racy mid way through until Davide Ongaro who had a great showing in the semis came alive late on even challenging Tessmann however the young 15-year old’s magnificent run at this World Championships was halted as he spent time in the pits fixing the pressure fuel line, he would finish 6th.

Robert Batlle was the driver on the move in the latter stages as he caught and passed Ty Tessmann late on to claim 2nd, making it an all World Champion podium here at the 2016 IFMAR Worlds in Las Vegas, USA, the Spaniard fittingly rewarded with a podium after suffering from kidney stones at the start of the week, the fact that he was running 8th at the halfway mark a sign of how close the fight was between the final drivers. Out front Ronnefalk had the occasional wobble but looked in command with a yoyo-ing gap increasing up to 20 secs towards the end.

With the minutes counting down on the hour-long final Ronnefalk embarked on his last lap, clapped and cheered on by the racing crowd, it was almost a fairytale last lap, as the Swede had a bit of a brainfade on the last corner table top, getting it all sorts of wrong, before getting a bit of help from a marshall and crossing the line to become the 2016 IFMAR World Champion.

BREAKING NEWS: Ryan Cavalieri given post race penalty OF ?? Seconds added to his time for contact with Tessmann. He will start 4th. 2nd.

Ryan Cavalieri starts on pole for the hour-long final after pipping Ty Tessmann in the 2nd semi final, David Ronnefalk won the first semi after being pursued by the young Davide Ongaro. Elliott Boots finished in 3rd despite having the pit for fuel at the 6 minute mark, Top Qualifier Jared Tebo looked a little out of sorts in his semi yielding the lead on the first lap on the rough double jump (now double singe!).

Drama in the first semi as Dakotah Phend led away early on for a large porton of the first semi until settling into 3rd only for disaster to strike on his penultimate lap as he flamed out, despite this he would scrape into the main and will start 11th. The unlucky 7th place finishers (top 5 from each semi bump with the next two fastest from either semi) were Cole Ogden and Mike Truhe.

Jared Tebo is Top Qualifier of a 1/8 Offroad World Championships for the 2nd time in his decorated career after his first in 2010 in Thailand.

Jared assured his position as Top Qualifier after grabbing the top spot in the penultimate round of Q5, with two TQs and two 2nd places. Elliott Boots makes it a one, two in qualifying for Kyosho and Pro-Line, the British driver TQ’ing 3 rounds (Q1, Q2 & Q6) but a 5th in Q4 costing him a shot at repeating his Overall TQ heroics of Argentina 2012.

Pacesetter in practice David Ronnefalk is 3rd having had a split qualifying, a sluggish start but the strongest after the halfway point (TQ & two 2nds), HB team mate Ty Tessmann in 4th who has had a tough time throughout qualifying, ending on our sour note in Q6 with a flame out after landing on another car, costing him a potential 3rd spot overall. Dakotah Phend concludes the top 5 and Ryan Maifield ensures the ‘team mate’ pattern of two Kyoshos, two HB and two TLRs in the top 6.

A worthy note to young Juan Carlos Canas in 13th, here racing at his first Worlds, impressively making the semis directly, not forgetting young Davide Ongaro in 7th whilst Adam Drake and Yannick Aigoin sneak into the top 16 showing us the old guys still got it!
