Race report by Jon Hazlewood:

The annual European 1/8th Off Road Championships, this year took place at the fantastic facility owned by the well known racing family Baldo. The facilities were top notch, and the track was epic to say the least, a nearly 1 minute lap through multiple elevation changes, jumps and cambers would provide one of the stiffest tests we have ever seen in these championships. The length of the track certainly was an obstacle for those who didn’t attend the warm up race, as doing so few laps in a run doesn’t allow the driver to repeat the same sections many times to learn them, still the usual suspects would rise to the top over the course of the week.

2016 European Championship Manufacturer Statistics

euros_header

Just in case you missed it first time round a couple of days ago, here were the manufacturer stats from the Euros.

The 2016 European Championships in Redovan, Spain is well underway with 156 drivers competing for victory, thanks to OS’ Shimazaki-san for collecting the following figures ans sharing them with us of all drivers taking part in this 5 day event.

Not surprisingly, Mugen are top of the pile in chassis popularity, with almost a quarter of drivers (24.4% [38]) running the MBX7R buggy, more surprising is TLR’s numbers with 24 drivers running the US brand, two more than 1/8 Offroad veterans Kyosho, 3rd on the overall list with 22 cars present at this year’s event. In total 13 chassis manufacturers are represented here this week including the sole Intech.

In the engine stakes, OS and Ultimate engines both have 29 drivers racing their powerplants with REDS 3rd overall with 20 drivers represented, the three top brands, representing half the field here at the Euros.

Elliott Boots takes 2nd European Title as Batlle & Ronnefalk suffer servo failures on same lap

DSC_4141

What started out as one of the closest finals in memory, with Ronnefalk, Boots and Batlle leaving the pack – the trio deciding that the title was between them, racing hard, only mistakes separating them, deflated as Robert Batlle’s and David Ronnefalk’s throttle servos shut down on the same lap costing them both a shot at victory.

From Highs to lows:

An almost unthinkable dual failure 15 seconds apart, which will surely haunt the pairs’ servo sponsor – given the high profile nature of the event and drivers involved. One wonders whether it is recoverable.

First you must finish.

Whilst victory looked to have slipped through his grasp as Ronnefalk and Batlle were up the road with less than 10 mins remaining, Elliott kept his head down and would benefit as he suddenly was gifted the lead with a final pit stop remaining. His car stayed together, he wasn’t the fastest at that point in time after a couple of slow pitstops but nonetheless he now has two European Championships to his name.
