Round 4 of qualifying didn’t turn out at all as planned, with Alex Zanchettin pipping Elliott Boots to TQ in heat 4 of Q4 – The Q4 showdown was setup nicely as the track had continued to evolve, becoming slightly faster but also harder to drive. Robert Batlle was the first of the top heats to find this out as he started out his run with an immediate crash, followed up by a further one on lap 4, this left the door wide open and Darren Bloomfield would set provisional TQ with an 11.574, some two tenths infront of Yannick. Heat 2 saw home driver Davide Ongaro step it up with a 9.805 a time that would net him 5th overall, heat 3 and Berton looked solid in the warm up but a costly crash on lap 2 dropped him off the lead which Oscar Baldo would take up with an 11.484 – Ongaro still ontop.
Up steps heat 4 with Q1 TQ Elliott Boots expected to stroll through the open door and take over the top spot, however that would go to Italy’s Alex Zanchettin, pipping Boots late on as he finished, Zanchettin doing a 37.284 laptime on the way to taking a 06.184 time. Heat 5 would finish the round with even more expectation on David Ronnefalk, it wasn’t to be however as he opened with a 37 sec laptime, followed up by a very costly crash and marshall, 3 further 37 sec laptimes offered hope but chances of a top 5 finish faded towards the end, handing TQ to Alex Zanchettin after Jorn Neumann upped his game and snuck a 3rd only hundredths behind Boots.

Elliott Boots occupies the overnight TQ spot at the 2015 Euros in Sacile, Italy – Boots came out of the blocks in Q1 [Watch his run here] taking TQ infront of Marco Barufflo – winner of the Euro B Championships when they were held here in 2013. Round 2 witnessed a strong comeback by David Ronnefalk, overcoming a backmarker incident to TQ infront of Riccardo Berton, however the star performance of the day went to Robert Batlle as he reminded everyone the speed that he’s capable of. From the simpleton’s view, it would appear TQ and a potential victory is between Elliott, David and Robert.
Shout out to Lee Martin & Neil Cragg, our track walk boys who didn’t have the best of days, onto tomorrow.

Robert Batlle made amends in Thursday’s final round of quali after two runs with mistakes, he set the Ongaroring track alight with a mega time of 8/5:05:420 in heat 1, the bar had been set, could anyone topple the formiddable time ? – Elliott Boots strung together a beautiful run, 1.3 secs shy of Batlle’s stunner – beating his own Q1 time by some 4.5 secs – still only good enough for P2… Going into Q3, man of the moment Riccardo Berton was one to watch, however a flame out in practice and subsequent steering link breakage halted his chances of securing a 3rd solid run. Up stepped heat 5 with David Ronnefalk (in the last of the ‘fast’ heats) – Robert Batlle must have waited anxiously as Ronnefalk whipped out a 37.799 opening lap, settled into a 38 sec pace, before once again coming together with a backmarker who had got the jump ahead wrong.
One wonders how long EFRA will stick to the outdated system of stacking the fast guys across 5 heats – the result, backmarkers who are 3secs per lap slower than the frontrunners. Ronnefalk recovered to net 3rd with a tasty 37.345 last lap, ending up 1.5 sec infront of Bayer – now running Yannick Aigoin’s new Sigma RC Fuel.
A pretty awesome battle upfront seems to be developing with Boots ontop after three rounds, at this comparatively early stage it would seem that it’s between Batlle, Boots and Ronnefalk, for TQ and maybe the win…

Round 2 saw defending Champion Ronnefalk on track in the last heat of the round, he put in an impressive run, despite a late encounter with a backmarker who didn’t move aside quick enough, a 37.506 fastest laptime just faster than Elliott Boots before him who had two laps with errors, Riccardo Berton continued to shine, just missing out on TQ by 1.2 secs. The high bite track is rewarding drivers, but ready to bite any complacency – Robert Batlle, fastest man in practice had a scrappy run but still managed 5th overall. One more round to go today.
