Maifield & Phend win Cactus titles

EUR_0442

4WD Mod Buggy
Arizona local boy Ryan Maifield made full use of his knowledge and experience round the SRS track as he came away with a record 4th consecutive 4WD Cactus Classic title. Maifield was in the hunt in all three A mains, winning A1, in the thick of it in a chaotic A2 which saw Tessmann walk away with the win and finally tking home 2nd in A3 behind Jorn Neumann, passing Tessmann on track to secure the title. A stunning result for Ryan Maifield, fitting that given 2015’s Cactus will be held in a new facility, Maifield would walk away with such a deserved victory. Heartbreak for Tebo however with two duff finals – A1 not even starting, a promising 3rd in A2 and then a broken slipper shaft in A3.

2WD Mod Buggy

Two wheel proved a completely different animal to 4WD as Dakotah Phend swept everyone else aside to win A1 and A2 in style leaving the rest of the pack to decide placings in A3. In both openers it was clear that Ryan Maifield was pushing as hard as his new Associated B5M would allow but didn’t quite have the pace of Phend, however he did take the win in A3 and thereby secure 1st and 2nd in 4WD/2WD. The headlines belong to Phend for his stunning performance however, driving beyond his young age

AT4_8263

The final A main of 2WD Short course saw a lively ding dong encounter between Cavalieri and Maifield – each with a win a piece, the lead was Cavalieri’s for the first part of the final until Maifield found a way past, the pair battled for a good few laps until Cavalieri snuck past and crossed the line justinfront of Maifield.

Phend completes A2 win and takes 2WD title

AT4_8967

A2 of 2WD didn’t match the drama and heartache that 4WD delivered, but what it did give us was the 2014 2WD mod Buggy Champion after a pressure-absorbing display of fine driving.

Ryan Maifield tried valiantly from 2nd to destabilise the Phenom in front however a few small mistakes and caught pipes wasn’t enough for hard charging Maifield to find a way past. In the end Maifield stayed within half a second of Dakotah but without a sniff of victory, a late mistake gave Phend all the breathing room of the world whilst Maifield finished 2nd and Cav 3rd.

Tessmann wins dramatic 4WD A2

AT4_8907

A2 of 4WD mod buggy will surely go down as one of the most dramatic races of the day as Jorn Neumann started out badly on lap one, landing wide allowing Jared Tebo and Ryan Maifield to sneak past, Ty Tessmann would also slip by a little later. Ryan Maifield was smelling 4WD victory as he saw Tebo go a little wide on the uphill corkscrew section then drag raced down the straight past Tebo. Maifield held the lead but got a small double horribly wrong allowing Tebo back past again, that was until another couple of laps later where he managed to catch up toTebo’s rear bumper and challenge him in the most dramatic part of the final which started with just over 2mins to go, Maifield seemingly carried significantly more speed and a tighter line, perhaps catching Tebo unawares, the result was slight carnage which allowed Maifield to take the lead and Tessmann to sneak into 2nd.

With just over a minute remaining Tessmann closed right up to Maifield, however he would fall back again, that was until disaster at the top of the hill again as he caught the pipe, but held the throttle wide opening, managing somehow miraculously to flip his car back on it’s wheels, this prompted Scotty Ernst on the mic to go into commentator overdrive as the top 4 ran like a freight train giving Tessmann the lead and a solid win of A2. 4WD A3 is sure to be a classic.

Cavalieri wins 2WD A2 short course main

AT4_8778

Race 27 – A2 of 2WD short course turned out to be a real  crowd pleaser as the two Associated stars duked it out for the lead, poleman Ryan Cavalieri just about holding off Ryan Maifield who sniffed a speedy win but it wasn’t to be. Cavalieri wsa pushed during the first half of the race and despite a few small moments Maifield couldn’t quite steer his short course past, it will go down to a great A3event.

As Maifield faded slightly towards the end Travis Amezcua caught up and battled hard for 2nd place and managed to throw his Durango truck up the inside and make it stick. It goes down to A3…

Tebo wins A2 in Stadium truck

EUR_9964

Poleman Jared Tebo endured long periods of pressure from Jorn Neumann as the German star tried in vain to unsettle the 2x World Champion. It wasn’t to be however as Tebo hardly put a wheel wrong, completing a start to finish victory, it was less successful for Ryan Cavalieri as he suffered bobbles which allowed Billy Fischer to sneak by into 3rd. Toward the end it looked like Neumann might have the laptime to catch and pressure Tebo up close but pushing to hard he ended up losing time. This sets up a nice showdown between Tebo and Neumann for A3!

Phend flawless in 2WD A1

AT4_8717

A1 of the 2WD mod buggy class witnessed a much calmer first A Main compared with 4WD as the top 4 remained unchanged – Dakotah Phend produced a calm and considered victory from start to finish, Maifield n the back of his 4WD A1 win looked racy but never quite pulled up close enough to really challenge Phend who had a small cushion all the way till the end. Despite a crash late on by a backmarker where Maifield gained time it wasn’t enough as Phend took a deserved A1 win.
