Ongaro smashes Euro-B Q1

Q1 saw yesterday’s practice pacesetter Davide Ongaro once again top the timesheets, up in the first heat of the day he pushed hard, his Mugen/RB combo looking on the edge of ragged, despite a couple of small mistakes and losing 5 secs on his penultimate lap the 12 year-old Italian wonderkid showed extreme pace – 6 secs clear of P2 Alessandro Stocco – great run for the TLR racer. Indeed Ongaro’s fastest lap of 40.443 looks unreachable for the majority of the other runners, 2nd in practice, Marco Baruffolo suffered at the hands of backmarkers with two 47 second laps, although yesterday he had the pace this morning Baruffolo’s RB One R buggy looked a different animal, catching up with Eric Aita of RB, he explained Marco drove a bit too punched, perhaps early morning nerves creeping in. Just missing out on 2nd overall was Spain’s Oscar Baldo, he had two slow laps losing around 8 seconds but a best lap of 41.623 puts him in the hunt, backed by guys that know how to win a World Championship – the Modelix Racing team. In 4th a very good run for Danish Kyosho driver Martin Hansen – the father/son combo clearly have things worked out in Q1, behind them Jeremy Pittet with Baruffolo 6th, Bottosso 7th and Tony Truman 8th.

Ongaro & Baruffolo top practice

12 year-old Davide Ongaro did his father Mauro proud as he topped practice on day 1 of the 2013 Euro-Bs in Sacile, Italy – his hometrack the Ongaroring hosting this year’s event, Davide improved upon fellow RB powered runner Marco Baruffulo who managed 8/5:29.98 in the afternoon’s first round of practice, Davide finding two seconds with a time of 8/5:27.24.

Sitting in 3rd overall Italy’s Alberto Papa, confirming a 1,2,3 and perhaps a sneaky Italian home advantage dare we say! Although perhaps its not a coincidence that all three are in fact running RB’s Automatic Damping System (ADS) suggesting the Fioroni-RB developed product is doing the business.

In P4, Oscar Baldo – a driver who many have picked as a candidate on Sunday having put in a great second run to move him up, Oscar found time on the track and came within 3 secs of Baruffolo – encouraging. In 5th Erik Bottosso, Italian local ace, 6th last year’s Champion Alessandro Magi, just managed an 8 lapper in the last round. 7th Gianmarco Razzi, 8th last year’s TQ Jeremy Pittet, 9th Alessandro Stocco and 10th Matt Perry of Team GB – finding 10 seconds from Rd 1 – 2 and missing out on 8 laps by 0.5 secs – strong showing from Matt. Other notables – 13th James Le Pavoux of Guersney, 15th Tony ‘nothing but the truth’ Trueman, 16 Tom Robin, 17 Joao Lopes.

These chaps demonstrated their hot physiques in the heat. Hot

Day 1 at the Euros was a warm one with a well-stocked facility running smoothly, the track taking quite the beating but holding up well – signs suggest that it won’t break up much more with some areas rock hard. Although the weather looks promising for Saturday, Sunday is another question entirely, with thunder and rainclouds gathering on racers’ smartphone weather Apps.

The Kids, this Euros is all about the Kids

As Day Uno wound up, the traditional Opening Ceremony closed it out, with racers donning national flags and t-shirts in preparation for the slightly cheesy display of ‘European Unity’ – more Eurovision song contest than Europe’s crème de la crème of ‘B’ level racers fighting on track, but a ‘nice’ feature. In the pre-event report we highlighted our personal ‘favourite’ feature of the track – the now rather dry and sawdusted ‘swamp of death’ – whilst walking the track with Trueman and Welshman Ben Williams, Ben pointed out the various obstacles he had made slight contact with, last year’s 3rd place finisher struggling ever so slighly by his standards with what the Ongaroring and the pace of the young kids at the front – showing the others how its done…

This leaves us to close it out – a balmy Italian evening of pasta, pizza, beers and wrenching for all involved after the national anthems have died down,  join us tomorrow for four rounds of qualifying. Oh and Ricardo Monteiro, your dad is here, we promise!

Euro-B Track & event preview

Sacile in northern Italy hosts the 2013 European ‘B’ Championships this weekend, located about 40km north of the world famous aquatic city of Venice, the track, the Ongaroring is where 2012 Euro B Champion Alessandro Magi will be hoping he can be the first driver to successfully defend a ‘B’ title, looking to stop is a long list of talents. Arriving at the track we were pleased to see that a great deal of work and effort has been put in by the Ongaro owners and track crew, lots of facilities and spread out, not cramped – however it was clear they’ve suffered from rain recently with the mud still drying under the firey Italian sun.

The track has a mix of surfaces, from several YouTube videos its been a loose top surface with some corners in concrete and jumps with astroturf and a ‘feature’ metal bridge, not to mention the awesome ‘swamp of death’ at the end of the straight! Whoever gets the entry totally wrong and starts cartwheeling towards it better hope their car isn’t swallowed by some aggressive swamp Koi. Speaking of all things aquatic, we very much approve of the Ongaroring’s onsite mascot – we’re calling him Terry the Track Turtle.

So who’s our tip, who’s hot and who’s drowning in the pond? Well… the kid everyones’ watching is naturally the young Mr Davide Ongaro (Mugen/RB/AKA) – he knows this track like the back of his hand, is quick and has experienced hand Carlo Jacopini wrenching on his car, joining him on the Italian posse are Marco Baruffolo, defending Champ Magi, Ale Stocco to name a few, the Frenchies have talent as well – Zak Medjoubi, Dan &  Tom Robin, Jean-P Sartel. Spain’s Oscar Baldo will surely be hungry after a strong Euro B result, RB driver Andres Marcelino has been doing well recently also, Switzerland has last year’s star Jeremy Pittet, he came oh so close to winning but just pipped in the final, Yael Zurfluh is another fast one.

Team GB will be looking towards Ben Williams – on the podium last year, and Tony Truman – P6 in the 2012 BRCA rankings, not to mention Bradley Baird from Ireland, Robert Raphael, Max Cordts, even young Burak Kilic – truth be told there are buckets of talent and many unknown factors….

SWORKz at the Euro-B

Sworkz have been in contact telling us that the company will be offering it’s support to all Sworkz drivers at the Euro-B this weekend in Sacile, Italy via Austrian driver Gerhard Steinbock – bringing lots of spare parts, which we’re told will be free for the 12-15 drivers SWORKz are expecting to take part, hailing from Austria, Germany, Poland and France.
