The third and final round of the 2017 Northeast Indoor Regional series took the local drivers to Batley Buggy Club and the fantastic MB Models Raceway near Leeds on Sunday 26th February. The 86 racers that attended the event were greeted with a testing track laid out on EOS carpet with jumps and a difficult 90 degree table top at the end of the straight. In 2wd James Helliwell and Jonathon Skidmore battled it out for TQ with James taking the honours with two 1st places and a second in round to Jonathan’s 1st and two 2nd places seconds in round.

Unfortunately Jonathon would not feature in the A final for long as a mechanical failure would take him out of contention early on. The crowd were treat to an exciting final nonetheless as Jack Hirst slowly hunted down James Helliwell for the full 5 minutes. James hung on though and took the win by only 0.2 sec in the end.

After the A final the 2wd top 10 looked like this:

  1. James Helliwell
  2. Jack Hirst
  3. Mark Graham
  4. Chris Pattinson
  5. James Chappell
  6. Harry Britain
  7. William Skidmore
  8. Jonathon Skidmore

Despite Jonathon’s bad luck his scores from the previous two rounds were good enough to secure him the 2017 2wd championship. Jack Hirst finished 2nd and Neil Adamson 3rd.

In 4wd James Helliwell would dominate qualifying with three 1st places and the only 22 lap run. Chris Pattinson and Steven Pierce looked to be his closest challengers and they lined up in 2nd and 3rd respectively. The A final started with James controlling the race from the front and slowly pulling away from the chasing pack. Jonathon made his way through the field and tagged onto James’s rear bumper around the 4min mark and a close battle ensued for the remaining minute. Jonathon eventually took the win following a controversial overtaking manoeuvre. The result stood and the championship was unaffected by the result as James would take the title.
