Blake Pickett reports after claiming the overal victory in expert buggy class at the East Coast Off-Road Series… On Friday morning my dad and I headed down to the Badlands RC Super-cross at Myrtle Beach SC, for the final round of the East Coast Off-Road Series. The Badlands is one of the premier off-road facilities on the East Coast USA. It always draws the region’s best sponsored and privateer drivers. All major brands were represented. Upon arrival, the drivers stand was already full of guys getting in their practice laps for Saturday’s program. The track was a well prepared and technical new layout, challenging as usual. My Team C T8T and my T8-V3 felt great, and so required very little tuning all weekend. After a couple of tire changes, I felt fast and comfortable.

Saturday morning’s program was unfortunately delayed due to rain. The Badlands crew did a terrific job re-working the track to resume racing but one round of qualifiers was eliminated as a result of the delay. However, after two completed rounds I had secured the TQ in both Expert Buggy and Expert Truggy classes. Those were much needed bonus points for the series. The 25 minute truggy main went smooth. I swapped the lead with Team Mugen ace John McGinty several times until suddenly my motor went lean. I had to come in for an unscheduled stop to make an adjustment. That allowed John to pull away and me to fall back to third, which I was able to hold onto.

In Expert Buggy I was clearly the fastest car on the track. As a result of a mistake on lap two I had to come back from 10th but was able to race my way back to the lead. Unfortunately, my dad pitted me one lap too early in the first stint, causing our fuel strategy to be off. While leading the race with about a minute to go, I was forced to make a splash and go pit stop to secure the finish for the points, but sacrificing the race win. I fought hard to regain the lead, but finished in second place securing the overall points championship for buggy.

In summary, I had a great time representing Team C Racing and racing against some of the greatest drivers on the East coast. After a 6th place finish in round one of the series earlier this year, I was able to TQ two of the last three rounds. I won two and finished 2nd in the other. This was enough to come away as the over-all champion in Expert Buggy while finishing 3rd overall in Pro Truggy. I want to extend a huge thanks to Team C Racing, Novarossi and my Mom and Dad.
