As we departed the humidity of Houston, Texas we stopped by the Gulf Coast RC Raceway track on the Monday to take one final look at the track, to be greeted with somewhat hesitation by the majority of Team Associated’s core race team – Cavalieri, Maifield, Saxton, team manager Brent Thielke and designer Josh Alton – who joined the team on the last day of the nats. A few other racers and teams were milling around, with a palpable buzz in the air – not quite as ‘Hush Hush‘ as Mercedes’ secret F1 tyre test with Pirelli; both Cavalieri and Maifield were there mainly to test tyres we were told and despite the lower humidity in the morning there were a few towels on tables…

Its an open secret that AE have in the past year plus experimented with various different geometries, parts and at times the two Ryans running different prototype cars – see last year’s ‘Maifield’s Changing RC8.2 article‘ – the current RC8 platform traces its roots back to 2007 when the original RC8 was released – a good length of time for any car to remain competitive.
